Bas Rutten Pancrase MMA Career
| Bas began his professional mixed martial arts career with the first MMA organization at the time, Pancrase in 1993. Japanese pro wrestlers Masakatsu Funaki and Minoru Suzuki traveled to scout fighters in Holland to join the new MMA organization where they found Bas Rutten who was a Muay Thai Kickboxer at the time. Pancreas was a precursor to what would become modern mixed martial arts, early MMA names were Vernon White, Ken Shamrock, Frank Shamrock, Guy Mezger, and Maurice Smith | ![]() |
| His lack of ground-fighting experience at that time lead to a few defeats in his career by Masakatsu Funaki and the then "King of Pancrase" Ken Shamrock. Bas returned in 1995 and had a victory over the Minoru Suzuki who was previously undefeated and won his first "King of Pancrase" title. Bas later avenged his losses to both Frank Shamrock and Masakatsu Funaki. In 1996 he went on to defeat both Jason Delucia and Guy Mezger and in so doing became a three time "King of Pancrase."Bas relinquished his title in 1996 with the pancrase organization to be present for the birth of his first daughter. When Bas returned to Pancrase a year later he achieved 8 straight wins, taking his winning streak to 19 straight victory's. |
The UFCIn 1998, Bas signed with the Ultimate Fighting Championship. He wanted to start his movie career and felt that the exposure in the UFC would be great publicity. His first fight was against Tsuyoshi Kohsaka in UFC 18. Bas won by KO. Next he faced Kevin Randleman for the UFC Heavyweight Champion at UFC 20, this fight went into overtime, with Bas taking a close decision victory to become the UFC Heavyweight Champion. Later that year Bas vacated the title in order to drop down to middleweight (his natural weight class), and try to become the first person to hold a UFC title in two weight classes. |
